ARTIST OF THE WEEK: BLANCA GÓMEZ. aka illustration is not dead. 04.07.11
this week’s ‘featured artist of the week’ has been hanging around in my bookmarks for a while now, constantly asking me to open the page again and again. luckily, for me, i’m being nagged by some beautifully fresh images. the work of blanca gómez, most often used in magazine publications and card work, is refreshingly clean and minimalist, yet hidden throughout are gems of geometric complexity and playfulness(seriously check out those wheels). her beautifully lined prints, reminiscent of the work of miroslav sasek (author of the ‘this is…’ series. this is paris. this is san francisco, etc) with a decidedly 1950s color palette, seem like the perfect addition to an ad campaign looking to deal with a sense of nostalgia and simplicity. while print outlets seem to change their dwindling budget focus away from the illustration world, illustration still remains a relevant and crucial commercial practice especially with its ability to facilitate comprehension and draw in its viewer. illustration is no dead practice in the advertising game - for an extremely relevant example check out noma bar’s amazing (and very recent) work for ogilvy & mather, paris (ibm, a smarter planet) as well as his addition to itv1’s five-part drama ‘injustice’. as demonstrated by bar’s work, illustration has the unique ability to depict and synthesize a lot of information, both efficiently and compactly, and can be applied as effectively in a digital context as in print-based work. i hope that gómez’s work, too, begins appearing in advertisements - it would make the world a lovelier place.
