siff is currently going on in seattle (as is beer week and folk life after that - this city really is magical) and as such i am certainly in a filmy mood. on sunday morning at 11 at the neptune, i had the pleasure of viewing submarine. not only does this beautifully shot film feature music by alex turner (yes, of the arctic monkeys), but it captures a multi-layered view of the many relationships in people’s lives. shot through the eyes of one young boy who simply wants to fix his parents marriage and balancing a new relationship with the bullying, red-coat adorned jordana. while there were a few parts that get a bit slow, overall this film was the perfect balance of laugh-out-loud narration (and as we all know narration can go horribly wrong) and eye-wetting moments. the character of oliver tate (the main character, a 15-year-old swansea boy) is at once arrogant (he constantly boasts of his intelligence, while building up the tragic impact his death will have on the world) and endearing. an overall beautiful film, i look forward to its wide release. the rest of this week is going to be awesome.
